MURDERS IN THE COLOMBIA'S AMAZON
In the last 10 years, Colombia has witnessed the killing of over 380 environmentalists, making it the most dangerous country in the world for those defending the land. In 2023 alone, there were 73 recorded victims.
Most of the deceased are indigenous leaders, Afro-descendants, farmers, and environmental activists. The violence, spanning over 70 years, pervades the poverty-stricken rural communities, fostering uncertainty and fears for the future.
Despite the peace agreement signed in 2016 between the state and the FARC leaders, aiming to demobilize the country’s largest armed group, many dissidents have chosen to continue the armed struggle, rejecting disarmament agreements, thus generating new waves of violence for territorial control.
“Till The End” is an investigative reportage documenting the current scenario in one of Colombia’s hottest zones, the Putumayo department, along the border with Ecuador, primarily controlled by two armed groups: the “Comando de la Frontera” in the south and the “Fronte Carolina Ramírez” in the north.
Environmental leaders from Afro and indigenous communities strive to make their voices heard to defend their territories from the expansion of illegal activities, from drug trafficking to uncontrolled extraction of gold and oil, becoming targets of guerrillas and jeopardizing their lives but fighting until the end for the defense of the Amazon.
